Focus on Domaine de l'Abbaye de Pierredon

The estate of the Abbaye de Pierredon, located in the Alpilles mountain range (in the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence), is a magical place. Its vines, nestled in the heart of 600 hectares of forests, scrubland and olive groves (the estate also produces excellent olive oil), are placed under the protection of a 13th century abbey, now restored. The name of the cuvées evokes the prayers that once punctuated the daily life of the monks (known as Chalais). The wines here are guaranteed "organic" in order to best respect the wild and preserved character of the place. It was Antoine Dürrbach (the son of the founder of the legendary Trévallon estate) who vinified and aged the cuvées from 2013 to 2019, the year in which his cellar master, Badigh Maaz, replaced him. Both brought stringent requirements that have now been rewarded by increasingly asserted international recognition to the Domaine, owned by a wealthy Italian family. At Pikowines we have chosen (amongst their selection which includes reds, whites and a rosé, made from the Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Rolle - local name of Vermentino - Cabernet, Merlot and Sauvignon), two vintages with the best aging potential: The Vespro cuvée, a harmonious blend of Cabernet sauvignon and Syrah, roughly in equal parts, offers melted tannins, real freshness with the "spicy" characteristics of beautiful Syrah and great length in the mouth. 2016 75 cl : 24 euros 150 cl : 48 euros 300 cl : 96 euros 2017 75 cl : 26 euros 150 cl : 52 euros 300 cl : 104 euros The Initium cuvée, made from 100% Merlot, is totally original. Mineral, it offers aromatic complexity, a minty freshness on the palate, as surprising as it is unusual 2017 75 : 21 euros 150 cl : 42 euros
